What is Rattan?
Rattan grows in a long slender stem and maintains an almost uniform diameter for the whole length, therefore making it an ideal material to weave. People often mistake it as a vine but it has a hollow core similar to bamboo. The outer part is extremely durable and hardwearing with the centre being softer allowing it to flex.
There are in fact over 500 species of Rattan but only 3-4 species are suitable for making into roller banner units or other useful items such as baskets, planters and garden furniture. Rattan originates from South East Asia, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam; it is harvested all year round and grows very quickly so makes it a very sustainable source for manufacturing roller banner mechanisms.
